When you step out of the high-tech lift into the vestibule of Torre d'Alta Mar, 75 metres above the sea, you may well have an almost out-of-body experience. The 360-degree view is that spectacular: the sea and the city at your feet, and the hills surrounding them in the distance. It is little wonder that it has attracted architects, actors and artists. But this luxury, high-end restaurant does everything it can to distract you from the views. The décor is elegant and contemporary, and the Catalan cuisine (with a particular emphasis on fish), with international influences, lives up to the standards now expected of a restaurant in Barcelona. Standout dishes include a starter of salt cod and lobster rolls with black olive oil and mixed vegetables, and as a main course, sea bass with sautéed vegetables, shiitake, rice noodles, soy and sesame. The wine list and service are also excellent. Remember to ask for a table by the window!
